Applications that cannot talk to the rest of the business become another silo. The useful ones integrate, automate and stay operable.
A standalone application can look finished and still fail. If people have to retype data, export CSVs, or keep a shadow spreadsheet, the software did not replace the process. It added a step.
Modern businesses run on several platforms at once: CRM, finance, content, commerce, internal tools. The product we are asked to build usually has to live in that network.
What “a system” means here
- Connect — APIs and integrations with the systems of record
- Automate — remove the repetitive hand-offs
- Process — documents, events and queues, not only forms
- Analyze — show operators what is happening
- Decide — keep humans on the exceptions
- Scale — permissions, audit, environments, the unglamorous parts

Automation without disappearing the work
The worst automations hide what happened. The useful ones make the path visible: what ran, what failed, who needs to act.

Start with the seams
When we discover a product, we look at the seams first: where data enters, where it leaves, where someone is acting as the integration. That is usually where the software should be.
